- Use approved flotation devices
Did you know that over 400 people drown every year? As a result of the risks, if your child cannot swim then it is essential that you buy an approved flotation device that is the right size. - Touch supervision
Even if your child can swim, it is important that you stay within an arm's reach of them at all times when they are in the water because they are still at risk, especially if they become tired, or are in water that is out of their depth. Do not overestimate your child’s capabilities as water can be dangerous for all, and because drowning is the third highest cause of death in children in the UK. - Check the water
Make sure that you always check the water before you, or your children bathe in it. Always make sure to determine how deep the water is, and if you can’t, then do not get in. 85% of open water drowning incidents occur because of a lack of knowledge of the risks of the site. Also make sure to check the water temperature because cold water not only increases the chances of your children becoming cold which can increase the risk of them struggling in the water, it can also increase the risk of them developing hypothermia. - Learn to Swim
Learning to swim is of course a great way to minimize the risk of childhood drowning. Statistically participation in swimming lessons reduces the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%. You can start teaching your child to swim from 1 year of age, so there really is no time like the present.
